5/23/2023 0 Comments Dead end in norvelt series![]() ![]() Birch admits she and the team of writers were specific about including the added layer of race into these conversations, due to the real statistics that back them. ![]() Birch’s gory and sometimes brutal reality of the birthing experience pushes the “nice” and “clean” twin sister to reckon with herself and the question of her own morality. As people arriving into that space, hoping to have a baby or being pregnant and there being complications or having a birth - because it’s unpredictable - how can you possibly be ready for all the potential costs that might arise? Costs to your body, and also financially.”Īt several points throughout “Dead Ringers,” Beverly is forced to confront the evil truths about the “miracle” of birthing. And coupled with the fact that it’s one of the most expensive places in the world to have a baby, I find that staggering that it’s a business and a system. “The thing that I found consistently shocking, and still find shocking, is how high that maternal mortality rate is. “I don’t know that I was ever thinking about it as a statement,” said Birch. Beverly also goes through a fever-dream sequence in which she’s confronted with the barbaric beginnings of obstetrics, and bears witness to an enslaved Black woman being tortured by a white male gynecologist (with instruments still used). On the show, a Black mother dies shortly after giving birth because doctors refused to validate her concerns, another Black mother deals with a case of postpartum depression so severe that it leaves her wanting to give away her baby. ![]()

5/23/2023 0 Comments Ninth ward book review![]() Unfortunately, though, romanticized depictions such as this one threaten to undermine our collective sense of the true plight of pre- and post-Katrina Ninth Ward residents. ![]() Rhodes’s characters are likable and her story gripping. The two children must confront not only the intense storm and Mama Ya-Ya’s death but rapidly rising flood waters to survive. Knowing she herself will soon die, Mama Ya-Ya decides to wager that Lanesha’s talents, both her supernatural skills and her more commonplace pluck and creativity, will see the young girl and her friend TaShon through Hurricane Katrina safely. Mama Ya-Ya knows it will get bad, but she has no means to get Lanesha out of the city. Their exquisitely happy, though poor, life in the New Orleans Ninth Ward is disrupted by news of a powerful storm approaching. ![]() Born with a caul, 12-year-old Lanesha can see and sometimes communicate with spirits, and her guardian, former midwife Mama Ya-Ya, has dreams and visions that foretell the future. ![]() ![]() ![]() There were also parts that annoyed me a lot. There were parts of this book I really enjoyed. Love, friendship, and a dead Austro-Hungarian archduke add up to surprising and heart-changing conclusions in this ingeniously layered comic novel about reinventing oneself. ![]() Colin is on a mission to prove The Theorem of Underlying Katherine Predictability, which he hopes will predict the future of any relationship, avenge Dumpees everywhere, and finally win him the girl. On a road trip miles from home, this anagram-happy, washed-up child prodigy has ten thousand dollars in his pocket, a bloodthirsty feral hog on his trail, and an overweight, Judge Judy-loving best friend riding shotgun–but no Katherines. And when it comes to girls named Katherine, Colin is always getting dumped. When it comes to relationships, Colin Singleton’s type happens to be girls named Katherine. Or perhaps the theme of turning a liability into a super-power is a part of the attraction. Eastman, of Go Dog Go and Are You My Mother? fame, add just the right touch of whimsy and humor to the story. However, I have had several library patrons, emerging readers of the twenty-first century, fall in love with Robert, too. I might credit nostalgia since I first read about Robert back when I was an emerging reader over fifty years ago. ![]() I honestly don’t know what it is about this story that makes it so appealing. Finally, of course, Robert’s sneezes save the day, foiling a bank robbery and making Robert an Allergic Hero. When Robert’s allergy, and the mighty sneezes that result from it, wreak havoc in one job, persistent Robert moves on to another job, trying to find his place in the world. A classic easy reader, first published in 1961, Robert the Rose Horse features faithful, hard-working Robert, a horse who has an unfortunate allergy to roses. ![]() 5/22/2023 0 Comments Books like radio silence![]() At some point of the book, I became less attached to the story. This book is about family, friendship, going to college, getting to know yourself better, and genuinely loving someone with all your heart. Though, I wish the story of the podcast was expounded more, because I find it fascinating. We get a glimpse of what the podcast of the main character was about. The story, however, is kind of slow burn. I have never read a book with very short chapters like this one. To confess why Carys disappeared…įrances is going to need every bit of courage she has.Įngaging with themes of identity, diversity and the freedom to choose, Radio Silence is a tor de force by the most exciting writer of her generation. Uris attended schools in Norfolk, Virginia and Baltimore, but never graduated from high school, after having failed English three times. He derived his surname from Yerushalmi, meaning "man of Jerusalem." (His brother Aron, Leon Uris' uncle, took the name Yerushalmi) "He was basically a failure," Uris later said of his father. William spent a year in Palestine after World War I before entering the United States. His father, a Polish-born immigrant, was a paperhanger, then a storekeeper. Leon Uris was born in Baltimore, Maryland, the son of Jewish-American parents Wolf William and Anna (Blumberg) Uris. His two bestselling books were Exodus, published in 1958, and Trinity, in 1976. Leon Marcus Uris (AugJune 21, 2003) was an American novelist, known for his historical fiction and the deep research that went into his novels. ![]() ![]() ![]() It shows how Vietnamese women emerge victorious, even if the world is against them. ![]() This prophecy will reunite estranged mothers, daughters, aunts, and cousins-for better or for worse.Ī multi-narrative novel brimming with levity and candor, The Fortunes of Jaded Women is about mourning, meddling, celebrating, and healing together as a family. ![]() Mai is convinced they might drive her to an early grave.ĭesperate for guidance, she consults Auntie Hua, her trusted psychic in Hawaii, who delivers an unexpected prediction: this year, her family will witness a marriage, a funeral, and the birth of a son. Though Mai’s three adult daughters, Priscilla, Thuy, and Thao, are successful in their careers ( one of them is John Cho’s dermatologist!), the same can’t be said for their love life. She’s divorced, and after an explosive disagreement a decade ago, she’s estranged from her younger sisters, Minh Pham (the middle and the mediator) and Khuyen Lam (the youngest who swears she just runs humble coffee shops and nail salons, not Little Saigon’s underground). Oanh’s current descendant Mai Nguyen knows this curse well. ![]() It started with their ancestor Oanh who dared to leave her marriage for true love-so a fearsome Vietnamese witch cursed Oanh and her descendants so that they would never find love or happiness, and the Duong women would give birth to daughters, never sons. ![]() ![]() ![]() Moreover, Ambrose did history itself an incredible service by collecting the stories of ordinary men. I didn’t know him personally, but in interviews he seemed like a nice man, congenial and friendly, who often charmingly mentioned his family in his books.
